On March 19th, Luca gave a talk at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, as part of the -1 Encounters series. The talk addressed questions around sound and media in relation to her research, mixing in field recordings and snippets of her forthcoming ethnographic film.
The talk was about listening to networks of students and Muslim scholars. Based on examples of ten months of ethnographic research conducted in N’Djaména, Luca reflected on the joint wish that exists to share and the digital and physical places where Chadians share. Muslim women use applications like WhatsApp and TikTok to be involved in a community where religion is central. Listening is part of women’s activities in religious spaces. The objects of attention are panegyrical poems. She mixed field recordings into a subtle dialogue with empirical contemplations.
